Stonewall County is rich in history with communities such as Aspermont, Swenson, Peacock, and Old Glory. Each community fostered with the coming of the railroad in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Now, they are home to many large ranches, great people and some unique activities and industries.
Laid out as a town in 1889 and settled between the forks of the Brazos River, Aspermont is the county seat of Stonewall County. The latin world “Aspermont” translates in English to “Rough Hills”. Industry in the area consists of farming, ranching and oil related businesses. The community is graced by a view of Double Mountain, the most striking geographical feature of Stonewall County. The main recreational attraction is hunting. Aspermont is well known for its quail, dove, deer, turkey,and wild hog hunting.
Swenson, located 8 miles northwest of Aspermont, celebrates Texas Independence Day with a parade. They incorporate a variety of entries and floats from all over Stonewall County.
Peacock, located 12 miles west of Aspermont, was originally called Alluvia when it was a stop on the Stamford and Northwestern Railway in 1909. In 1910, the name was changed when J.W. Peacock moved to Alluvia. Today, the Peacock Reunion is still a large celebration in July, bringing natives from all over the country. The Shop of Peacock is open for business and offers a variety of interesting local and regional memorabilia.
Old Glory, originally named Brandenburg, still has an active zip code and some great activities. Located 10 miles east of Aspermont, Old Glory is home to Old Glory Days, held each July 4. Citizen’s rally together and put on this annual event with vendors, a parade and a fireworks display.
